NVD-501 – Fentanyl OS
NVD-501 contains fentanyl a leading opiate for the treatment of pain.  NovaDel plans to develop NVD-501 as a fast acting, easy-to-use product for the treatment of break through pain in cancer patients.

Current Status

NovaDel is completing development of a formulation of NVD-501 and plans to initiate human clinical studies in 2009.

About Breakthrough Cancer Pain

Pain is a common morbidity in cancer patients occurring in approximately30% of newly diagnosed patients and 65-85% of advanced cancer patients.  Opiates are commonly used to treat cancer pain, however approximately 65% of opiate treated cancer patients have acute pain episodes, called breakthrough cancer pain, which requires the use of a short-acting drug on top of the patients basic pain therapy regimen.  There are two products approved in the United States for the treatment of breakthrough cancer pain with combined sales of ~$500 million.  The global market for breakthrough cancer products in predicted to grow to over $2 billion by 2016.
